Yeah, they didn’t stay neutral by not having the ability to back up that stance. I mean, they hoarded money, art and other valuables from countries that were afraid of the Germans getting their hands on them—if the Germans COULD have taken them over they would have tried.

But basically everyone that could carry a gun was a trained reservist, there were piles of weapons dumps/concealed artillery that looked like innocent farmhouses or hovels, the mountain passes/avalanche areas were mined...

And that’s more or less how it remains today. Crafty defenses hidden in plain sight and only those who need to know about them know. That goes for foreign leaders too. You can bet your ass Hitler knew about them or he’d have tried going in there.
